Can i play guitar with acrylic nails. At least thats something Ive always wondered. My musical observation is that playing with nails acrylic or otherwise gives a more immediate clarity and high end. It is an acrylic coat but it also a nail strengthener so the natural nails underneath arent damaged by it - in fact they get stronger with regular use.
But using nails allow for a much wider range of tone color on the instrument. Wont hurt your natural fingernails. Great for classical guitarists and are durable enough for steel string and flamenco players.
I use a coating on my nails. Although I generally have good nails the inevitable does happen. However acrylic nails are available from Strings by Mail.
I think I will just practice on my husband because he could use the acrylic over lay for his work too. If you stop using a pick file your nails and tune your guitar differently you can. The ideal fingernail length to play fingerstyle or fingerpicking guitar is said to be no longer than 2-3 mm.
Finally I decided to go to the nail salon which is literally right next door to the guitar shop where I teach some lessons and had my natural nails reinforced with an acrylic overlay.
